The Pantheon

Maroufle

Maroufle is a painting whose canvas is glued to another surface.
Beginning in 1874 the Marquis of Chennevieres, the director of fine arts, commissioned a cycle of paintings in the maroufle style by the most famous artists of the day.  The canvas was affixed to the walls, and dedicated to the history of Saint Genevieve and the epic story of the beginnings of both Christianity and the monarchy in France.
The first picture is a painting depicting the coronation of Charlemagne in Rome in 800 AD.
The last picture is a painting of the martyrdom of Saint Denis where he picks up his severed head and walks off.
