D-Day, June 6, 2013

Omaha Beach

The Americans were assigned to take Omaha Beach and Utah Beach on D-Day.  Omaha was the most heavily defended of all the beaches.  The Germans had heavy guns and concrete bunkers on the high ground defending the sea.  Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong and the Americans suffered horrendous casualties.  The weather was terrible and the landing craft either missed their zones or sank in the cold rough water.   It took much longer to get off the beach than was anticipated.
By the end of the day, the Allies had taken several beaches along the Normandy coast.

We walked down to the bunkers and down to the beach and thought about what had taken place 69 years ago.  It's so hard to begin to imagine what they went through.

  1. Those are some really nice posts on your D-Day trip. And great photos too. Sounds like it was quite a tour.
