Marc and Park

The Marc Chagall exhibit:  "Chagall Between war and peace" was showing at the Musee du Luxembourg.  Every time we walk by, there is always a line, so I knew it would be something to see.  We have seen several of his pieces and its all interesting to say the least.  "Chagall died in 1985, at almost one hundred years old.  He had crossed the twentieth century, lived through a revolution, two world wars and exile, rubbed shoulders with some of the most innovative artists of his time, and produced a work in which can be read his private experience, memories of the encounters, his travels and his homeland."   (From the exhibit brochure).  His beloved wife, Bella is depicted in many forms, as are his dreams, imagination and himself.  His hometown, Vitebsk, soldiers, both Christianity and his heritage Judaism are all major influences in his work.  He and his family were in exile in New York in 1941--along with many Jewish artists and poets.  In 1944, Chagall waited for the liberation of Paris, but during this time, his wife, Bella died.  He was destroyed by her death and "Everything went dark."  He returned to France in 1949 and gradually managed to find serenity.
