Saint Pierre de Montmartre and Musee de Montmartre

We were off to right a wrong.  The other day I misidentified Saint Jean de Montmartre as Saint Pierre de Montmartre.  We did find Saint Pierre next to the overpowering Socre Coeur.

There is a small courtyard leading up to the three massive iron doors leading into the sanctuary.

The interior is simple and elegant with beautiful stained glass windows and statuary.

For a more detailed history of Saint Pierre see my previous posting concerning the church.

In the same area is the Musee de Montmartre and the Jardins Renior.  The museum was previously a home to numerous artists, including Renoir, Bernard, Dufy, Valadon and Utrillo.  The Museum houses a unique collection of paintings, posters and drawings that recount the history of Montmartre.

Renoir's Gardens were reconstructed in memory of Auguste Renoir.  He painted several masterpieces at 12 rue Cortot, the building that became the museum.

The posters of the famous black cat which represented the popular night club "Tournee du Chat Noir",  French for black cat are featured here.

Lapin-Agile, a cabaret popular with most of the Montmartre artists is just across the street.

Pictured in the museum is the rabbit that became the icon for, and for which Lapin-Agile was named.

The gardens are beautiful and also contain the famous clos vineyards.  Wine is still produced from the grapes and sold with the profits going to charity.

The museum and gardens are certainly worth the trip.
