A Weekend in Laval

Michele's Walking Tour

Sunday morning Michele treated us to a view of Laval, where she went to boarding school from the age of 11 through high school.  Every Monday morning she rode the bus from Juvigne (where her family's farm was located) and back home on Saturday morning.  She did this each week except once when she was 12 and was punished for drying her socks on the radiator and not allowed to go home for a month!  Rather harsh!

How many times can you say quaint and beautiful?  The midieval town of Laval has a population of about 51,000 and is 300 km (190 miles)  southwest of Paris.  The river Mayenne runs through the middle of the town.

The major industry was linen in the 1300's until milk became more profitable.  Have you tried Camembert cheese?  Laval is home to the "President" brand of cheese, sold all over the world.  Some major sites include the Chateau Laval, the 13th century castle and its keep, and the Catheral of the Trinity (La Trinite).

Midieval Laval was a walled city and much of the original wall remains today.

High on a bluff overlooking the river is Jardin de la Perrine.  A magnificent park and garden.  The roses were in full bloom and they were spectacular.  There was also a small aviary in the park.

Sunday morning was peaceful and calm which is the norm and why the locals like it here so much.

The town has every modern convience and store, even 2 McDonalds!  Then it was back home for another awesome lunch of  grilled lamb chops prepared by Olivier and Claire.
