A Weekend in Laval

Afternoon Visit to Sainte-Suzanne

Sainte-Suzanne is one the the most picturesque midieval villages in France and close to Laval.

The village was well fortified and evidence indicates it dates back to the 6th century B.C.  William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England attempted to capture the city in 1083.   After three years of seige he was unsuccessful and gave up.  Remains of the original chateau and fortress date back to the 11th century.

In 1605 a new lodge was added to the chateau.  It took eight years to complete and was finished in 1613.

As in all midieval villages, in addition to a chateau there is a Cathedral.

We trooped up and down steps, over the cobblestone streets,  poking our heads down narrow ally ways and into small businesses.  We peered over the rockwalls to view the countryside.

This is a village you would truly call quaint!
