Exploring Amalfi

We were out early to catch the Sita bus to Amalfi this morning. We drove the car to where we were going to catch the bus and parked it. Why are we taking the bus when we have our own car you ask?  Because it is impossible to park in Amalfi.  Sitting, waiting for the bus, numerous people road by, some in cars of course, some in buses, some on bikes but most on motorcycles, with 2 people.  The bus we were supposed to take finally came by and on time, but he was full and motioned for us the take the next bus.

Almost an hour later, the next bus came by and he was full too.

So we gave up and went back to the apartment.  Our landlord, Pasquale was there fixing the TV.  We told him of our problem and he told us just what to do.  Hurry, go down stairs right now and you can catch the local Furore bus which also goes to Amalfi.  So we did.  The bus was right outside our steps, we got the last two seats and off we went.  The driver let us out about 200 meters from city center, not too bad a walk-- thru a tunnel and down about 300 steps, but we made it!

We were in Amalfi!!

Us and about a million other tourists, this is their busiest month of the year.  We checked out ways to make our return trip and how to get on the ferries for a trip to Capri, later.

Of course after all this work, we had worked up quite an appetite.  We found  a nice place for lunch the travel guide, Rick Steves  had recommended and it was good.

Now a little shopping was in order.  After all, how  can you be in the middle of souvenir town and not be taken in by all the goods.

I bought a t-shirt with fish on it, very cute.
We saw the beautiful St. Andrew Cathedral with all the steps and marvelous tile work.

And the spring fed fountain with it's statue of Saint Andrew.

Time to think about making the return trip.  We checked all the buses, but none were going in our direction, so we started walking.  We walked past sunbathers and beach goers.

We walked past a cruise ship.  We walked under threatening clouds.

And we walked back up those 300  steps and through the tunnel and on and on.  We finally came to a place where we thought we might be able to catch the bus back to Furore.  But it was not to be.  We ended up taking a taxi back, but we made it!  Happy to be back, the TV 's working, we got a big glass of ice water and all is well.  Maybe we'll try something else tomorrow.
