Final word on Trogir and our Apartment

When we selected this area and our apartment Tom did some research and thought it looked nice. However, we had no idea how nice it would turn out to be.  Trogir is a beautiful town with an interesting history.

"Old Town" was an awesome area to visit and from there you can take boats going to other islands and cities or, as we did, a three island pleasure cruise.

Our apartment was fantastic! Our hosts, Tonka and Mario made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our visit.

They have seven modern one bedroom apartments all with beautiful bay views within easy walking distance to Old Town.  We couldn't have asked for more.

If you want to consider visiting a place you might not have thought of, I recommend Croatia and specifically Trogir.  Checkout Villa Tonina at info@tonina-apartments.com.

Today We Are Going To Split

Split, Croatia that is.  The best way for us to get there is by ferry.  We line up for the 11:15 departure and it's packed, standing room only.

Lucky for us, we did get a seat. It's about an hour trip with one stop at Slatine, which is at the far end of our island.

First, a little history.  In the year 305 AD, the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruled the entire Roman world at the time, decided to build his leisure time retreat--where he intended to spend the rest of his life--in the sea by the islands of the Split archipelago--the future city of Split.

The city was protected by numerous fortresses and strong walls.  Today, we entered though one of the gates.

We made our way down a passage way below ground where there are now lots of tourist shops.  It turns out this was the basement of Diocletian's palace.

It seems everyone had the same idea we did, as the Old Town part of the city is very crowded.

We made our way to the centerpiece, the Cathedral.

In the seventh century, Bishop John Ravenna transformed the abandoned palace into the Cathedral Dedicated to the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary.  We paid the fee that gave us entry into the sanctuary, the crypt and the baptismal.  The sanctuary was small, but very ornate

and then on to the crypt.  This area was small too.

Next across the courtyard to the baptismal.

It was very hot in Split today, so we are looking for a cool place to have lunch.  There is no cool place, but we found a nice place for lunch.  The server suggested Tom have the "king of the sea" fish.  We think it was a red snapper.  Here is a before and after photo of said fish.

I had homemade fish ravioli with prawns.

It was a wonderful lunch even though it was still very warm.  We wandered through the tourist area and found an ice cream treat to cool us off.

Back in line for the return trip to Trogir to make sure we get a seat.

We have to pack for our trip to Dubrovnik and the ferry ride to Bari, Italy.

Spending Time in Trogir

Last Sunday when we drove into Trogir, I said to myself , " How will we fill a whole week in this small Croatian town"? Well, now we're at the end of the week, and we have been enchanted by this Croatian paradise and we still have things we would like to do and see.

We are great fans of Old Town, with it's historic cobblestone walkways, churches, restaurants and
shopkeepers inviting you in to check things out.

The old north and south gates seem to be inviting us into the walled city.

I

The  market is a must.  The most beautiful fruits, vegetables, clothes and beach items.

And honey.

Couldn't resist buying more of the most delicious juicy peaches!

We passed on a restaurant the other day where a cute girl welcomed us to come to her family's place.  She was so nice and genuine, today we couldn't resist.  They definitely had a lavender theme.

We each had fresh selections from the nearby sea.  Tom said he thought it was some of the best food we've had on this trip and I agree--delicious!
It's even back to the beach one more time for us non beach people.  After enjoying the clear blue water we went in search of the perfect sunset picture.

I think we nailed it!
