Today, our London Pass took us on a spine tingling experience, or as the brochure says. "Horrifyingly Educational Fun!" We traveled back in time to explore 2000 years of London's gruesome history in the vaults of the city's most famous bridge. There was a short introduction, with about 20 of us sitting in a dark room. Then we witnessed a pseudo "drawing and quartering" of a poor victim. He was even flogged with his own intestines! All of this was done tongue in cheek with cute young actors, in a scary haunted house type setting.
We did learn, at one time there were wooden houses with thatched roofs atop London Bridge. A fire started at one end of the bridge, so all the people ran to the opposite end to get out, but wind blew the fire to that end as well and 3000 men, women and children died in the fire. I bowed out when it was time to go in the "hellavator". A little too claustrophobic for me
Tom continued on while I visited with a delightful lady from Australia, who was in London visiting her son.
There is a lot of activity going on under London Bridge. One of the tube stations is there--that's a lot of activity in and of itself! But there's also a huge market, shops and many restaurants. After reading a couple of menu offerings, we decide on Lobos.
And what a good choice it was! Lots of tapas to choose from. We stared with a glass of red wine, bread and olive oil. Then we shared a green salad, pan seared monkfish and the daily special--short ribs.
If you're ever under London Bridge and are hungry, we highly recommend Lobos!
