We're Snowed!

Friday, October 11th
We couldn't resist one more ride up the mountain in the snow to check out the view before we left Oberstaufen.  Thankfully the gondolas were running.

The view up was spectacular, but when we got to the top the fog was so dense, we couldn't see anything.

But it was still well worth the trip.

Saturday, October 12th
All packed and ready to move on, we turned in our keys and took off for Varenna, Italy.  Oberstaufen  was great and we certainly enjoyed our time there.  A light rain started to fall as we got on the highway.  The farther into the Swiss Alps we got, the more the snow picked up.

In fact, at one point it was snowing so hard, it was almost a white out!  The snowed covered mountains were beautiful to see.We came to a complete stop for over an hour and never knew what caused the hold up, but we were just grateful be to on our way again.  There was over 2 feet of snow and thankfully the snow plows were doing their job.

Through the mountains and out of the snow, we made it to Menaggio on Lake Como and to the ferry.

The ferry ride across the lake to Varenna was only about 20 minutes.

The mountain road above Varenna has a lot of hairpin curves.  After much searching we found our apartment.  The view of Lake Como is breathtaking to say the least and we see it from the picture windows in our living room and our second story bedroom.
Our landlady recommended Ca Mia, the small restaurant next to the apartment. So we made a dinner reservation.  As it turned out, we have a new personal chef!  Since it's the off season, we were the only ones Mateo cooked for.  The food was unbelievable!  We had 4 courses and each one was delicious.

Sunday, October 13th
We knew he was our personal chef when he came to our apartment this morning to tell us he would be open tonight.  We really hadn't planned on going back so soon, but with an invatation like that we made  a reservation for 7:30.  If it's anything like last night, we won't be disappointed.
We took a drive down to Varenna and strolled the streets.  Most places are closed today since it's Sunday.  But we had a nice time getting the lay of the land for future explorations.
